DRA Homes Chat: Going Off Script Could Be the Right Answer

Talking about NW Metro Atlanta real estate; including Cobb, Cherokee, Paulding, Dekalb, Douglas, Forsyth & Fulton counties. Tracking market trends, pricing and other real estate related issues. Chatting about lifestyle and fun events around the metro!

Going Off Script Could Be the Right Answer

If your real estate market is anything like mine, you can't swing a dead cat without taking out 9 real estate agents standing around doing nothing or doing the same thing that every other agent is doing (or pretending to do!).

Over the years, I have had some "interesting" marketing ideas pop into my head only to have them shot Golden Egg Indicates Odd One Out And Alonedown by brokers, other agents or mentors.

I've been accused of being too blunt, politically incorrect, insensitive.  Blah blah blah!

Often my ideas don't FIT WITH THE SCRIPTS that the real estate "gurus" say that we should be using. Sticking with the proven scripts...the tried and true...just doesn't fit my personality.

And I'm not ashamed to admit the reality is that I haven't been as successful as I would like to be by using them.

For 2016, I'm going OFF SCRIPT.

Way off.

I'm no longer going to worry about comparing myself with other agents.  I'm no longer going to try to emulate their marketing style.

I'm going to be bold.

I'm going to be honest.

I'm going to be ME!

Love me or hate me.  It makes no difference.

The only thing I'm really good at is being myself.

As the new year goes on, I will be testing my own ideas in my market.  I will share what works and what doesn't here in the Rain.

Be encouraged.  Be You!

What are you doing DIFFERENTLY in 2016?

Jeanna you go girl!!  I haven't used scripts in years - years.  If you listen to yourself and follow your truth that is the key to success on every level.  I often tell agents don't do stuff just because somebody with 'authority' says to do it as it may not be right for you.  If it's to be it's up to me! (or you)

Jenna, I want to puke when I think of scripts … I don’t do them – don’t need them. I want to have real authentic conversations and make connections with people. We cannot do that scripting.  When people script me I demand that they stop. If they don’t stop and just get real with me … I’m done.

Good for you, Jenna!  I've always felt that relying too heavily on scripts could sound a little forced and unreal.  I noticed it when I was looking at card.  The car salesmen all said the exact same things, and it made me want to run away - fast!

Posted by Patricia Kennedy, Home in the Capital (RLAH Real Estate) almost 3 years ago

I am with you.  I have never felt that scripts are authentic and are a bit cheesy.  I don't use them at all.  Good for you.

Jenna, And I think you'll do just fine being yourself.  I've got to think consumers recognize the canned stuff because they've heard it before ad nauseum.  Something real, someone they can trust, that's huge.

Have always done it my way, that is why I parted ways with my broker in California the minute my 3 years were up, and became an independent broker myself. Then did it again in Hawaii, became a broker without needing to do the 3 years again. Love the feeling of independence. Some things work, others take longer, I don't care. Life is good.

Glad to hear that no cats were hurt in the making of this post, but swinging a dead cat may not be the best way to take down other agents. Sounds like your new plan to set yourself apart from those agents by being yourself is a great option.

Jenne,

You have discovered that those who provide training, services and guidance treat us real estate agents, as though were are all the same and that results in us treating our prospects as though they are all the same. We all know how that leaves the prospect feeling after the third straight, "Now is the right time to sell!" closing point.

The genuine you is the you the Universe needs and will reward.

Here's the catch. This will hurt....sometimes.

The genuine you will be willing to be vulnerable. Vulnerability is courage.  The genuine you will be courageous and afraid of having her heart broken.....simultaneously....all day long.

To this person, others will be DRAWN.

You remind me of me, Jeanna.  I re-branded myself as Agent Blue Jeans this Summer, so now I can wear 501 button down Levi's everyday, everywhere.  My new business card has 501's on the front and back of it, and when the Office Manager looked at it, he said "what does Agent Blue Jeans mean?".  He's the only one that didn't get it.

It takes some guts though, because I'm the only one in Blue Jeans during the weekly Broker Preview meetings and Open Houses and such, and initially the other Agents stare, and talk - they can't believe I don't dress appropriately.  But everyone learns your name, fast, and 7 years from now, my Clients will remember me, and how to contact me, when they're considering buying another home.

Jenna, If you truly do this you will have the best year of your career. Scripts or any kind are for those who do not know what they are doing and are inauthentic to thier core self. Those agents come across interested only in a comission check and fundamentally fake. You will, if you follow what you are posting here , draw to you the right folks if you are right with yourself.

Go for it!  Be yourself, not someone who you are imitating.  I took the same route and got nowhere.  Take the ideas from the scripts, using them in your own way.  You will be amazed at how much more business you will attract by being yourself.  The idea is to stand out of the crowd.

Wishing you the best for 2016!

One of the things about creating your own script, is that you own it and know when to add or drop any part of it. Heck, I've been known to skip it altogether when I discover that a seller is ready to list without hearing anything I have to say!

Concentrate on just doing a better job in your listing presentation and marketing which leads to more listings because better results happens. Your results replace the script. Make sure the image sockets are all filled with the better taken eye candy. Upload the video to make it save time and gas for everyone and so the open house on demand happens round the clock. Real estate like life is not 9-5, M-F.
